+1 on this. I'm actually using a mechanic along those lines in my own project. If you can make the wizard have to put their points all over the place to use various abilities you limit their effectiveness.

For some reason, connecting explosion wizards to strength makes me think of the infamous "sparky sparky boom man" from Avatar ;)
